A 45-year-old farmer was arrested on Thursday for possessing two country guns at his farm in Upparapalli village near Gudiyatham town in Vellore.
The arrested person has been identified as K. Gopi. Initial investigations revealed that Gopi had leased a three-acre farm from its owner B. Govindasamy, who had moved to Hosur with his family a few years ago to grow paddy and other crops.
Police said that based on a tip-off, a special team conducted searches of his house and agricultural land. They found two country guns, explosives, nets, flashlights and batteries. He told officers he made the guns himself after watching videos about it. He used the pellets to hunt wild animals like monkeys, rabbits and spotted deer in the surrounding forests near the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh border. He also used it to keep wild boars from damaging crops.
The police seized two homemade weapons and other material. A case was registered and he was arrested and lodged in Vellore Central Jail. Another probe is underway.
