Dramatic scenes were witnessed here on Thursday evening after the police received a false alert that Rahul Mamkootathil, MLA, might surrender before the Hosdurg court, prompting massive deployment of personnel in the compound.
The police presence increased as there was speculation that Mr Mamkootathil would surrender or be arrested, just hours after the Thiruvananthapuram High Court denied him anticipatory bail in the rape and abortion case. Court officials in Hosdurg, including judges and senior staff, remained inside the court well after closing time, raising expectations even more.
Political activists from rival fronts, including the Democratic Youth Federation of India and the Bharatiya Janata Party, gathered outside the court to stage a protest, leading to a tense atmosphere.
However, District Superintendent of Police Vijay Bharat Reddy later clarified that the footage received was fake and the police force was withdrawn from the court premises.
