Fake bomb threat at new bus stand in Vellore city

The bomb squad combed the new bus terminus on the Chennai – Bengaluru Highway (NH 48) near the Collectorate in Vellore town for a hoax bomb threat sent by the helpline (100) to the police control center on Wednesday.

Police said the threat, received through a phone call from Chennai, warned of a possible explosion at the new bus station, prompting the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) to take swift action.

The ₹53.13 crore end, spread over 9.25 hectares, was built under the Smart Cities Mission by the Corporation. The facility was inaugurated by former Chief Minister MK Stalin in June 2021. In November 2023, a permanent police base was opened at the terminus.

The new terminal enables the operation of more than 500 buses.

Following the bomb threat, BDDS teams, using sniffer dogs, carried out search operations in and around the site – including car parks and bus bays at the new terminus. The team did not detect any potential explosive devices. A case has been registered by the Vellore North police. A probe is underway.
