With local body elections in the state just weeks away, factionalism in the Communist Party of India in Pathanamthitta came to the fore when Sreenadevi Kunjamma, a district panchayat member and state committee member of the All India Youth Federation (AIYF), announced her resignation from the post on Monday.
In a post on social media, Ms. Kunjamma said her decision arose out of the continued inaction of the leadership to restore party membership.
“As a district panchayat member and AIYF state committee member, I have been unfairly denied party membership, an act of deep injustice and humiliation. I have been waiting for justice for the last two months and have filed complaints with the district secretary, state secretary and scrutiny committee. Despite filing several written complaints over the past two years, this consistent support from the leadership has failed and continued to be enforced any support to make this decision today,” she wrote.
Ms. Kunjamma further said that she is also resigning from the Young Women’s Committee of the National Federation of Indian Women. She added that she has already received offers from several political parties, but has yet to decide on the next step.
Ms Kunjamma had earlier hit the headlines after she filed a complaint against the then CPI district secretary, AP Jayan, for illegal accumulation of assets. Following the complaint, Mr Jayan was removed from his post and demoted, although he has since returned to the district committee.
A few months ago, she also publicly accused a TV news channel of trying to get her to press charges against Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil.
