FACT workers staged a protest in Kochi

A joint council of various trade unions staged a day-long protest at Fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore Limited (FACT) here on Tuesday against the management’s alleged anti-employee policy and production paralysis in the public sector undertaking.

The protesters staged a sit-in outside the FACT Udyogmandal time gate and alleged that the suspension of production has put about 500 temporary workers in the loading, bagging and shipping sections in severe financial distress.

The main demands of the agitators included an emergency action plan to restore production, hire permanent staff and pay arrears of wages between 2017 and 2022. The protesters also demanded the immediate implementation of shift pay reforms.

INTUC district committee member TM Saheer presided over the meeting. FEA General Secretary Santhosh Babu, FWO General Secretary Tony MP and FEC (INTUC) General Secretary VA Nasser spoke.
