Kochi Water Metro ferry services are expected to be extended to Kadamakuda, a popular tourist attraction in the district, by Onam.

A floating pontoon is ready at the Kadamakudy terminal for berthing of ferries, while the final work on the much-awaited terminal is nearing completion. The electric charging infrastructure will be ready within 10 days. “Currently, we are waiting for the relocation of many Chinese fishing nets along the route which are hindering the smooth movement of ferries to the terminal. This may take up to two months and has to be initiated by the fisheries department. At the same time, dredging of the terminal premises will be done to ensure sufficient depth for the vessels,” said Sajan John, Chief Operating Officer, Kochi Water Metro Limited (KWML).

KWML is waiting for delivery of three more ferries from Cochin Shipyard to expand service to Kadamakuda. The Kadamakuda extension will be followed by the extension of ferry services from the High Court Terminal to Edakochi via Mattancherry, followed by the commencement of operations from the Ernakulam Terminal planned next to the State Water Transport Department’s Ernakulam Boat Jetty. Tendering for the terminal is underway, sources said.

Connection between the metro and the airport

KWML is waiting for the state government’s nod to operate ferries in the Aluva Metro Station – International Airport corridor via Periyar. “The distance can be covered in about 15 minutes if the Metro water ferries are allowed to operate at a speed of 20 knots (36 km/h). The Metro station and the terminal can be connected directly if a footbridge of about 70 meters is constructed,” sources said.

Meanwhile, Kochi Metro Rail Limited Managing Director Loknath Behera said a private engineering school has been commissioned to conduct a study on the proposal. “The results are expected in a month. A study on the technical aspects of the airport expansion would follow,” he added.
