An explosion damaged a Jewish school in Amsterdam on Saturday, with the city’s mayor calling the incident a “deliberate attack against the Jewish community.”
The explosion occurred in an upscale residential area on the city’s south side, Mayor Femke Halsema said.
“It is a cowardly act of aggression against the Jewish community. Jews in Amsterdam are increasingly confronted with anti-Semitism. This is unacceptable,” Halse was quoted as saying by Reuters.
No injuries have been reported yet, police and firefighters are on the scene.
Saturday’s incident came after Friday night’s attack at a synagogue in the city of Rotterdam prompted Dutch authorities to step up security at Jewish institutions.
“Another attack on a Jewish target; after a fire in a synagogue in Rotterdam, now an explosion in a Jewish school in Amsterdam,” opposition leader and Dutch MP Geert Wilders wrote after the explosion was reported.
“Anti-Semitism is growing every day. Unacceptable. Action needs to be taken. Prime Minister Jetten, Mayor Halsema and the police would rather join iftars than fight anti-Jewish hatred,” he added.
However, it was not immediately clear who was behind the explosion.
After the US and Israeli attacks on Iran and the subsequent response by Tehran, fears of possible attacks against Jewish communities around the world have increased.
