Experts highlight the potential of AI in flood forecasting and water management

Artificial intelligence (AI) could help predict floods and water shortages and enable faster decision-making on reservoir management, irrigation and drinking water supply, experts said at a science workshop held at Madanapalle Institute of Technology and Science (MITS) Deemed to be University.

A two-day science academies seminar on ‘AI and Space Technology for Climate and Resource Monitoring’ was organized by the CSE (AI and ML) department in collaboration with Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and National Academy of Sciences on Tuesday.

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru professor D. Nagesh Kumar said integration of real-time sensor data, satellite imagery and weather forecasting with artificial intelligence could pave the way for intelligent management of water resources.

Meanwhile, Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) scientist Kandula V. Subrahmanyam and National Atmospheric Research Laboratory (NARL) scientist Jyothi Narayan Bhate explained the applications of artificial intelligence in Earth observation and climate monitoring. Subhash P. Kuppuswamy of R4 Aerospace, on the other hand, highlighted the growing opportunities in the Indian space sector.

Students and faculty also participated in the workshop.
