The Maharashtra’s Buldhana District Health Department identified 37 patients suffering from nail deformity. These are the same patients from 15 Shegaon Taluka villages in the district who experienced serious hair loss in December 2024. Dr. AMOL GITE, a district medical officer Buldhana, said three days ago Sarpanch village reported him about the incident and the medical team was sent to control patients.
Dr. Gite said, “Nail deformities are different species; some experience nail separation from the nail bed, while some have curved and depth in the middle of the nail and slowly get rid of them. After their identification they gave them calcium and multivitamin accessories.

The deformity or release of the nails could have several reasons, such as exposure to various metals, said Dr. Gite. “We still have to receive an Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) report, which can reveal a real cause that can help us cure a root problem,” he added.
In February this year, health experts stated that wheat from Pandjab and Haryana and distributed through rationing shops in Burdhana has been recorded to contain a significantly high level of selenium.
Health experts said on Thursday that it is known that exposure to high selenium content can cause extreme hair loss and can further lead to the release and deformation of nails.
All affected persons come from the lower economic layer, which usually deal with agriculture and contracting places.
In December 2024 and January 2025, more than 190 people out of 15 Shegaon villages were clamped by a strange kind of character that led to baldness between children, men and women over the age of four. ICMR experts said that the scientific term for this condition is the Efluvium Anagen, a type of hair loss that occurs when hair is damaged in the growth phase. It is an uneven form of alopecia.
A team of experts from the ICMR-National Institute of Epidemiology, Chennai and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIims), Delhi gathered a sample that was sent to the ICMR-national institute for environmental research (Nireh) in the Laboratory Bopal and Aiims Delhi. The samples were taken from more than 155 people of all age groups.
Dermatological teams from ICMR and AIIMS collected hair, blood, urine, water, biopsy from the scalp, environmental and biological samples. None of the patients had any common symptoms or suffered from any health problems such as fever or diarrhea. Reportedly they do not use products such as shampoos or conditioners. Those who experience hair loss and nail deformity are eager to report that it could keep the key to solve their inexplicable health problem.
