The expert committee recommended that India not to fall into the criteria for acceptance of malaria vaccines because they are used for mild to high transmission settings with the risk of death in children, Rajya Sabha was informed on Tuesday (August 12, 2025).
State Health Minister Anupriya Patel responded to the question of whether the first Indian vaccine against malaria R21/Matrix was jointly developed by the University of Oxford and Indian serum and whether the vaccine received regulatory consent for use in the country.
“The matter for the use of malaria vaccine in the context of India has been reviewed in a properly established expert committee that recommended that India not fall into the criteria for receiving vaccines against malaria, as vaccines are used for mild to high transmission settings with the risk of malaria death,” she said in written response.
