Tristan’s father Chris Stubbs was a known name in the South African hockey circle. Former provincial player, Chris never got a chance to represent the national team. Yet he never discouraged his son from choosing a cricket over hockey.

In fact, Tristan started his sports trip with hockey, but the charm of fame and financial stability eventually became the key reasons why Chris led him to Gentleman’s game. After Chris had experienced the fighting and limiting the hockey career, he did not want his son to face the same obstacles.

What aspect of hockey do you think Tristan Stubbs was most beneficial?
Tristan grew up and watched his father controlled with a hockey wand, and naturally raised his sport. But over time, Chris gradually threw him on a cricket – a step to shape his future.
“There is no money in hockey. Hockey is a hard work and it’s fun, but it’s not a career,” said Chris, who watched his son’s practice from the stalls in front of Delhi VS Rajasthan Royals on ARUn Jaitley Stadium, in an exclusive interview with Timesofindia.com. Tristian plays for the capitals of Delhi in IPL 2025.

Chris still regrets that he will not get to the higher national team, but one milestone who has been offered proudly, played against India.

Which sport do you think requires more athletic skills?
“I played provincial hockey, but I wasn’t good enough to play for South Africa. One of my biggest games was against India. They came to South Africa at the age of 90.
“India crushed us 5-0,” Chris said with a big laugh.
The dream of representing his country remained unfulfilled for Chris, but hoped his son Tristan would go on – on his chest proudly wearing a national jersey with the flag of the country.
How hockey helped Tristian Stubbs
Chris wanted his son to start his way with hockey-to make the strength, timing and ball control-and then directed the same rough power and coordinating the hands of the eyes into the cricket.
And that’s exactly what Tristan is doing now. He became a nightmare for pitters around the world.
Stubbs fits in, selects the length in the flash and sends the ball rising to the stands. Strokes, sweeping, reverse sweeping, shoulder blades, paddle sweeping, straight units – you name it, they are all in its arsenal.
“It is obvious that he always wanted to play cricket. Hockey has never been a thing. The cricket from an early age,” Chris said.
“Playing hockey and cricket helped him a lot. Some of his shots clearly came from his back sticks. His back shots came from hockey. He was always on the side of the field when we played, and he grew up with a hockey wand in one hand and the ball in the other.
