A court on Saturday sentenced a former police sub-inspector (SI) to four years in jail in a case booked for taking bribes for releasing a two-wheeler involved in a road accident and issuing a copy of the FIR.
Kollam Special Judge (Vigilance) Mohit C. S sentenced R. Mohanan to three years under Section 7 (offence relating to bribery of a public servant) and four years under Section 13 (criminal conduct by a public servant) of the Prevention of Corruption Act and also fined him ₹20,000.
According to the prosecution, led by public prosecutor Siju Rajan, Mohanan took ₹1,500 from the complainant for lodging an FIR on the road accident and ₹2,000 for releasing the two-wheeler involved in the incident. He was caught accepting bribe in a trap set by Vigilance officials, the prosecution said.
The prosecution also told the court that Mohanan had also demanded bribes for registration of a crime related to the accident and release of a copy of the mahazar in the said case.
Mohanan denied the charges during the trial and claimed that he had never taken any bribe during his 30 years of police service. He retired from service in 2016.
After hearing both sides, the court convicted and sentenced Mohanan (63) for offenses under the Prevention of Corruption Act, alleging that he accepted the illegal gratification at the police station during his duty hours and in official uniform.
As the court said the sentences would run concurrently, Mohanan would only have to serve a four-year sentence, with the week-long time he was in custody counted towards the jail time.
