Communist Party of India (CPI) National Executive Committee member K. Narayana on Sunday criticized the United States’ foreign policy under President Donald Trump, saying it reflected “authoritarian and destabilizing tendencies”.
Mr. Narayana called on the international community to collectively oppose unilateral actions targeting sovereign nations.
Addressing the media in Vijayawada on Sunday, Mr Narayana said countries like Iraq, Venezuela and Iran faced serious consequences for pursuing policies independent of US interests. Referring to the ouster of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, he argued that the weapons of mass destruction allegations had led to long-term instability in the region.
He expressed concern over rising tensions regarding Iran and the growing strategic link between the US and Israel. He warned that any escalation in West Asia could disrupt global oil markets and adversely affect India’s economy.
Urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to pursue an independent foreign policy, he said India must protect its energy security and economic interests. He warned that strained relations with Iran could impact oil imports, which could lead to higher fuel prices and increased domestic costs of living.
The CPI leader also expressed concern over trade measures imposed by the US, saying higher tariffs on Indian goods could hamper India’s growth ambitions. He pointed out that geopolitical instability in the Gulf region could affect millions of Indian workers and reduce foreign exchange inflows.
Calling for a balanced diplomacy based on peace and mutual respect, Mr. Narayana said the CPI supports efforts to maintain global stability and opposes policies that increase international tensions.
