All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary KC Venugopal, MP, on Friday said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan bears full responsibility for Kerala police becoming a “sanctuary for criminals”.
He said the brutal face of the police has been exposed once again due to the Ernakulam incident where a policeman slapped a pregnant woman. “The situation is such that women cannot go to police stations and file complaints without fear. The images of assaults reflect the attitude of the police towards women. Kerala police was not like that earlier. It is the government’s administrative policy that has brought the police to this state. Used by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) to protect criminals, the police force has now turned into a haven for criminals.
Mr. Venugopal said the public was often unaware of brutal attacks on detainees because such incidents only came to light after years of legal battles. “What Youth Congress activist Sujith faced earlier in Thrissur was a similar form of torture. The Kerala Police, once known for upholding the rule of law, has turned into an instrument of attack. Recently, a number of cases of custodial torture have come to light,” the Congress leader said.
