The first surgery of heart transplantation in the General Hospital (GH), Ernakulam, is expected to take place in May.
The hospital authorities stated that they were ready to perform the procedure because the preparations were completed. “We hope to perform the first heart transplant surgery in May,” says Dr. Shahirsha R., Medical Superintendent.
He added that two patients with serious heart failure were initially identified after the screening process held at the hospital’s heart clinic. “We have also set up the required infrastructure to perform the first heart transplantation,” he said.
The hospital authorities launched preparations for the implementation of the heart transplantation after the institution received a license to proceed from the state authority and tissue transplant organizations (K-Sotto) in December last year. Screening of patients who required the procedure began at the heart clinic in the hospital.
Initiatives for heart care for GH received support after doctors have successfully procedure to replace the aortic valve (TAVR) to the 83 -year -old patient in November last year. The patient approached the hospital and sought the treatment of blocking in the arteries. TAVR is a less invasive procedure than surgery on the open heart and includes pushing a new valve into the existing valve by a small opening in the thigh.
The hospital also successfully carried out a TAVR to replace the heart valve with a 69 -year -old male patient from Perumbavoor without opening the heart surgery in 2022. The first kidney transplant was performed in the hospital in November 2023, while the first open heart operation was performed in 2021, according to hospital organs.
