President Donald Trump has appointed Erika Kirk, the widow of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, to the United States Air Force Academy’s Board of Visitors, replacing her late husband, who served on the advisory body before his assassination in 2025.
The council plays an oversight role over the academy and provides recommendations to the US Department of Defense on key issues such as academic standards, morale and institutional governance.
Erika Kirk replaces Charlie Kirk on the advisory board
Erika Kirk, who currently serves as Managing Director of Turning Point USA, has been selected to continue in the role previously held by her husband.
Charlie Kirk, co-founder of the conservative youth organization, was appointed to the board by Donald Trump in March 2025. He attended one meeting in August before he was murdered on the campus of Utah Valley University on September 10.
A White House spokesman said the appointment would help carry on his legacy.
“Charlie Kirk proudly served on the board and inspired not only the next generation of service members, but millions around the world with his courageous Christian faith, defense of truth and deep love of country,” White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales said in a statement.
“Erika Kirk will continue his legacy and be a fearless advocate for the most elite Air Force in the history of the world, whose warfighters keep our nation safe, strong and free.”
Role of the Board of Visitors
The 16-member Board of Visitors acts as an advisory panel to the Secretary of Defense, reviewing key aspects of the academy’s operations.
Its responsibilities include examining:
-Academic programs and training standards
– Cadet morale and welfare
-Institutional politics and leadership
The Board of Trustees submits an annual report evaluating the overall performance of the academy and recommending improvements.
Key Board Members
Several prominent legislators and political figures serve on the council, including:
– Markwayne Mullin, Republican senator from Oklahoma and Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Homeland Security
-Tommy Tuberville, Republican Senator from Alabama
Kevin Cramer, Republican Senator from North Dakota
-Ted Budd, Republican Senator from North Carolina
-John Hickenlooper, Democratic Senator from Colorado
Charlie Kirk’s legacy
Before his death at the age of 31, Charlie Kirk became a prominent conservative voice on US universities through Turning Point USA. The organization promotes conservative values among students and young voters across the United States.
After his assassination, Erika Kirk took over as CEO of the group.
The White House did not disclose the exact date of her appointment, but called the decision a “perfect choice.”
