Eravikulam National Park (ENP), the primary habitat of the endangered species, will reopen for tourists on Wednesday (April 1) after the end of calving season in the Nilgiri tahr.
According to Chief Wildlife Warden Pramod G. Krishnan, nearly 100 newborns have been reported in the park so far this year. “ENP celebrated its golden jubilee in 2025 when a record 144 new calves were recorded. As this year’s calving season is now over, visitors will be able to observe the Nilgiri tahrs from Wednesday,” an official said.
ENP bodies said the annual population estimate of the nilgiri tahr is scheduled for the last week of April.
New features
During the seasonal closure, the forest department introduced several new features to enhance the visitor experience. Officials highlighted the new “Rainbow Point,” a designated spot where visitors can enjoy the scenic landscape and frequent rainbow sightings characteristic of the area.
In addition, a three-story photo booth has been established near the Kurinji Garden, along with a new medicinal garden with more than 200 species of rare plants. “We expect the rainbow viewpoint, photo point and medicinal garden to be the main new attractions for tourists this season,” the official said.
