Former England captain Michael Vaughan has lashed out at the national team after they suffered a fourth straight Ashes defeat in Australia. The Ben Stokes-led side were crushed by 82 runs in the third Test in Adelaide, allowing Australia to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.
After England’s defeat, Vaughan started a a scathing attack on the team, saying they were badly exposed during the series. He also claimed that the Three Lions were puffed up in the last three years and that the entire cricketing world wanted to silence them.
“The whole attitude of this England side has been badly exposed on this Ashes tour and you don’t have to look far into history to know that heads will roll after a defeat like that. Finally, with a defeat in 11 days, it’s the worst I can remember in Australia. England were high on them for three years and the whole cricketing world wanted to shut them up in their column for The humbling This tour,” he wrote for The humbling This tour. Telegraphic.
Vaughan too criticized England’s ‘Bazball’ batting approach and their stubborn insistence on continuing it in Australian conditions.
“The Aussies are laughing. They can’t believe how fragile this team has got the quality in the side. For four years England shoved the news down their throats that this style would win in Australia. I don’t know where it came from. The only teams I’ve seen win in Australia were the ones that were willing to do the hard yards, crush the opposition and have a great bowling unit which he added.
Meanwhile, after the loss in Adelaide, England’s losing streak in Australia extended to four Tests. Their last win in the country came in 2011 when they retained the Ashes 3-1 under Andrew Strauss.
Since then, they have played 18 Test matches and lost 16 of them, with two ending in rain-affected draws. With two matches left in the series, Ben Stokes and his men will be looking to salvage some pride and end their long losing streak in Australia.
England last won the Ashes at home in 2015; since then, Australia have retained the urn four times after winning it in 2017–18 in Australia.
