Despite England’s campaign in the Champions Trophy 2025 coming to a close, their faint hopes were extinguished when Jamie Overton was dismissed by a spectacular running catch from Lungi Ngidi.
Lungi Ngidi’s Stunning Catch at Mid-On
The moment unfolded during the 26th over of England’s innings, with Ngidi stationed at mid-on for South Africa. A good-length delivery from Kagiso Rabada was lofted high by Overton, aiming for a boundary. However, the shot lacked both power and precision. The ball drifted towards mid-on, where Ngidi sprinted into action, covering ground swiftly to complete a remarkable catch. Overton’s innings ended with 11 runs off 20 balls, leaving England’s tail exposed.

England’s Batting Collapse
England’s decision to bat first proved disastrous as they were bundled out for a paltry 179 in 38.2 overs. Despite a valiant 37 from Joe Root, the rest of the batting lineup crumbled under pressure, failing to build any substantial partnerships. Wickets fell in quick succession, leaving England with an underwhelming total. South Africa’s bowlers, led by Marco Jansen and Wiaan Mulder (who claimed three wickets each), and supported by Keshav Maharaj (two wickets), delivered a clinical performance. With such a low target, South Africa are well-positioned to chase it down and secure their place at the top of Group B as they gear up for the semi-finals.
