
An entrepreneur based in Kerala Gokulam Gopalan, one of the producers of the film “L2: Empuraan”, was interrogated on Monday by the Directorate for Recognition (ED) for the alleged case of violation of foreign exchange.
According to the PTI press agency, it is against GoPalan and his company, Sree Gokulam Chit and Finance as LTD, for alleged FEMA violations £1,000 crore with certain NRIs and some related “unauthorized” transactions.
During the Friday search ED said he took over £1.50 crore in cash and “incriminating” documents in “violation” FEMA.
ED search comes in the background of a recent discussion surrounding “L2: Empuraan”, the second installments of the “Lucifer” trilogy.
“L2: Empuraan”, offered as one of the most expensive Malaysian films, was released on March 27 and soon became the topic of a hot debate on its criticism of right -wing policy and hidden references to Gujaratian riots from 2002.
Other film producers are Antony Perumbavoor and Subaskaran under Aashirvad CineMas and Lyco Productions.
According to Perumbavoor, a little over two minutes of scenes were erased after the controversy after the controversy.
Ed said he gathered “specific” intelligence that Sree Gokulam Chits and Finance Co. Pvt. Ltd., without a proper authorization of the competent authority, gathered a subscription to the Chit funds from persons staying outside India.
‘The amounts of subscriptions from these persons were collected in cash contrary to the regulations framed by the Indian Reserve Bank (RBI).
“This led to breach of regulations 4 (b) Regulation 4 (b) (permissible capital account transactions), 2000 read with circulation No. 107 of 11 June 2015, issued by RBI,” she said.
The company has gathered £3 71.80 crore in cash from people staying outside India and £220.74 crore through checks from the same category of people.
“Significant amounts were paid in cash to people (residing) outside India in violation of section 3 (b) fema,” he said.
The income tax department also issued a notice of Perumbavoor and sought to clarify alleged financial transactions related to his previously bankrolled films Lucifer and Marakkar.
However, IT Dept officials stated that the announcement was monitoring earlier raids made in 2022 and explained that it was not related to Empuraan.
Empuraan was directed by actor Prithviára Sukumaran, who also plays a role in the film along with the Malaysian super -star Mohanlal. Mohanlal expressed regret of the raging series and assured that the controversial parts would be removed from the film.
