The importance of India maintaining its leadership position in turmeric exports and working towards increasing the share with a sharpened focus on facilitating measures and active collaboration among stakeholders was emphasized by speakers at the Turmeric Value Chain Summit 2025 CII Telangana, organized here on Wednesday in collaboration with the National Turmeric Board.
Assuring that the Telangana government supports the board, Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao said farmers should be at the center of attention in any intervention. The benefits of turmeric farmers need to be protected. Turmeric could also be grown as an intercrop in palm oil cultivation, he told the gathering and called for measures to boost horticulture and vegetable cultivation. Turmeric reflects Indian culture and traditions. The separation of turmeric from the Spices Board and the establishment of a National Turmeric Board in Telangana is a good initiative and is expected to ensure further enhancement of turmeric production.
National Turmeric Board Chairman Palle Ganga Reddy said that turmeric is grown on 800,000 hectares in the country. In Telangana, turmeric is grown on 48,000 acres. He called for steps to increase awareness of measures to improve the quality of produce, particularly by involving market committees in Nizamabad, Metpally and Mahabubabad, which serve as major markets for turmeric.
Agriculture and Cooperation Ministry Secretary K. Surendra Mohan said the Telangana Vision 2047 has prioritized the welfare of farmers and identified 12 points to focus on to achieve the goal, especially increasing farmers’ income. Telangana accounts for 10% of the world’s turmeric production or 1.12,000 tonnes, cultivated by 40,160 farmers in an area of about 45,000 acres. Establishment of farmer producer organizations, value addition to promote exports and the need to promote organic and natural farming techniques to improve people’s health were emphasized by the senior official, CII said in a report on the summit.
