
A proposal to build a housing complex for the homeless, help to expand paddy cultivation initiatives to around 100 acres and poverty alleviation programs are among the proposals in the Eloor Municipality’s 2026-27 budget that was unveiled on Thursday.
The budget, presented by municipal deputy chairman Leela Babu, projects an income of ₹94.4 crore and an expenditure of ₹90.7 crore, with a surplus of ₹3.69 crore.
The apartment project is planned on land owned by the municipality. Roughly ₹50 crore is earmarked in the budget for the preparatory work. The goal is to complete the project by 2028 with help from corporate social responsibility initiatives and loans. The budget earmarked ₹32 crore for beneficiaries in the general category and ₹50 lakh for the Scheduled Caste category to carry out renovation of their homes.
He budgeted ₹14.95 crore to complete the construction of the new civic body building. It will be implemented on the basis of a detailed project report prepared by the previous council.
The city authorities still hope to expand the paddy cultivation area to around 100 acres with the help of samithis involving farmers. An allocation of ₹ 1 lakh was made to ensure a market for their production. The budget made a total allocation of ₹ 31 lakh for various initiatives in the agriculture sector. It has earmarked ₹ 1 lakh for animal birth control programs as part of steps planned to control the menace of stray dogs.
The budget allocated ₹1.5 million for various poverty alleviation programmes. Other projects and allocations include women’s empowerment programs (₹16,000), senior citizens’ festival (₹3,00,000), park at BUDS school (₹5,00,000), distribution of aids and scholarships and organization of art festival for the differently-abled (₹26), financial assistance to Scheduled Caste girls and women (₹1.3, 2 crore) and waste management initiatives (₹86 ₹ million).
