Eluru District Collector K. Vetriselvi has asked the officials to take strict measures to curb the consumption and sale of ganja, drugs and other intoxicants.
Chairing the District Narcotics Prevention Committee on Friday, she said that making Eluru a drug-free district requires collective efforts from all sections of the society. Individuals involved in the possession, consumption or transportation of narcotics will face criminal prosecution, lose eligibility for government employment and passports and have a permanent criminal record, she said.
Ms. Selvi instructed officials to intensify awareness campaigns in schools and colleges by putting up posters and organizing counseling sessions to educate students about the ill effects of drug abuse. She urged young people not to fall prey to drugs.
Citizens have been asked to report cases of drug use or smuggling in educational institutions on the toll-free number 1972 and ensure that the identity of the informers is kept confidential. She added that drug addicts will be treated through rehab centers.
