The elections to the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) will take place on 22 September, the Election Commission announced Assam on Tuesday, August 26, 2025).
The declaration issued by the Commission stated that September 26 was scheduled to count votes within 40 Council constituents managed by the Bodoland territorial region (BTR) including five districts in northern and West Assam.
Of these constituents, 30 are reserved for planned tribes and five for unplanned tribes. The remaining five are in the open category.
The Commission stated that BTR has 26.57 937 voters, an increase of 11.35% compared to the number of voters during the elections by 2020. The statement also stated that the number of polling stations was increased by 6.77% to 3,359 out of 3,146 five years ago.
“However, the Commission decided to continue the process of adding new voters until the last date of nominations, according to the rules, subject to the ongoing summary inspection performance of the Indian Election Commission,” the statement read.
The liberal of the united folk parties (UPPL), headed by Boro, is trying to keep power in BTR with or without its coalition partners – the side of Bharatiya Janata (BJP) and the side of Gana Surraksha (GSP).
These three parties met to create the Government of the Council in 2020, although they ended up behind the Bodoland People’s front (BPF) front, which appeared as the only largest party with 17 seats. BPF, a former BJP ally, ruled BTR for 17 years since 2003.
UPPL, BJP and GSP received 22 constituencies in 2020 surveys. However, defction of BPF and Congress (resulting in one seat) increased their seats and BJP from 12 to 15 to 14 to 14.
BJP, looking at a larger share of BTR Pie, decided to challenge public opinion surveys independently in September. Its primary opponent will be UPPL and BPF, making it a three-robber competition, and Congress is expected to fight in constituencies controlled by minorities.
BTC elections were charged as “semifinals” before the elections of the 2026 assembly in Assam.
