The State Election Commission has directed the government to declare December 9 and 11 as holidays for the two-phase local body elections in Kerala so that the public can exercise their right to vote.
These two days should be declared as holidays in the respective constituencies where elections are held, the commission recommended to the state government.
Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Alappuzha and Ernakulam go to polls on December 9 and Thrissur, Malappuram, Wayanad, Palakkad, Kannur, Kasaragod and Kozhikode on December 11.
According to the commission, these two days should be declared public days as well as holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act in the concerned districts.
Further, the state government should direct employers to ensure that employees, including those in factories and plantations, are given leave or sufficient opportunity to cast their vote, the commission said.
The Commission also directed the Central Government’s Department of Personnel and Training to declare holidays on election days for the employees of Central Government Departments and Central Public Sector Units in Kerala.
