Shatavadhani R. Ganesh and former BJP Rajya Sabha member Prabhakar B. Kore are among the eight personalities from Karnataka who will feature in the list of Padma awardees this year.
While Dr. Ganesh was awarded the Padma Bhushan in the Arts category, Dr. Chosen in the fields of literature and education, Kore is among the seven from the state who have been awarded the Padma Shri.
A graduate of the Indian Institute of Science, Dr. Ganesh, a writer in Kannada and Sanskrit, is credited with reviving the avadhana tradition in Kannada.
Three-time Rajya Sabha member Dr. Kore recently resigned from the Karnataka Lingayat Education Society elections in Belagavi, which he led for more than four decades.
Others on the list include Anke Gowda M., who leads Pusthakamane to spread literacy by providing free access to books. It has over two million books in its collection, which also includes rare manuscripts. He received recognition in the Social Work category.
Suresh Hanagavadi, recipient of the Padma Shri in the medical category, himself a hemophilia patient, fought against all odds to start the Karnataka Haemophilia Society to help those in need of medical intervention. His work in the field brought government support to cover the cost of expensive treatment.
SG Susheelamma co-founded the Sumangali Seva Ashrama in 1975 to provide shelter to destitute women, orphans and those from the economically weaker sections of society and was awarded the Padma Shri in Social Work.
Aeronautical scientist Shubha Iyengar, who was selected in the Science and Engineering category, is being recognized for her work in developing Drishti, an indigenously developed visibility measurement system to aid navigation, and infrared detectors that have been installed at 100 airports across the country.
Shashi Shekhar Vempati, who took Doordarshan and Akashvani into the digital age as the youngest Executive Director of Prasar Bharati, is among the Padma Shri recipients in the Literature and Education category. In the Commerce and Industry category, TT Jagannathan, who led the TTK Group, was awarded the Padma Shri posthumously.
