Eight people died after a truck collided with a car on the Deva-Fatehpur road in Barabanki district on Tuesday, officials said.
The incident took place when a moving truck collided head-on with an Ertiga, which reportedly did not have a number plate. The impact was strong, the car was completely crushed and caused panic among passers-by.
The identified dead include driver Shrikant Shukla, Pradeep Soni, his wife Madhuri Soni and their son Nitin, all residents of Fatehpur town. The identities of the other victims have not yet been confirmed.
According to officials, all residents of Ertiga were returning home after taking a sacred dip in the Ganges at Bithoor in Kanpur.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the loss of life and directed district officials to speed up relief efforts.
“The loss of life in the unfortunate accident is extremely sad and heartbreaking. My sincere condolences to the bereaved families. I pray to Lord Shri Ram to grant salvation to the departed souls, strength to the bereaved families to bear this immense loss and speedy recovery to the injured. Om peace,” an official statement quoted the Chief Minister as saying.
