Kolkata Knight Riders are still looking for their first win in the IPL 2026 season and their wait may continue for non-cricket reasons. After defeats against Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad, KKR now face the threat of rain ahead of their third match on Monday, April 5.
Led by Ajinkya Rahane, KKR will take on last year’s finalists Punjab Kings, captained by Shreyas Iyer. It’s an important early-season clash, but attention could quickly shift to the weather, which threatens to play a major role.
WHAT DO THE FORECASTS OFFER?
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there is a high chance of rain during the match window. The region is expected to experience another spell of Kalbaishakhi storms.
“The state is likely to witness another round of Kalbaishachi storms, with the possibility of hail and thunderstorms from Sunday to Thursday. The intensity and distribution of rains is expected to peak on Tuesday and Wednesday,” the IMD said.
“The weather is expected to worsen on Tuesday when Kalbaishakhi storm accompanied by winds of 50-60 kmph, lightning and rain is likely to hit Kolkata and adjoining areas.”
AccuWeather also suggests a risk of disruption, with a 51% chance of showers around 18:00 IST, just before the throw. This increases the likelihood that the competition will be delayed or shortened.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THE GAME IS DELAYED?
If rain interrupts play, there is a limited window to complete the match. At least a five-over-a-side game must be played to achieve a result.
The cut-off for the start of the match is 22:56 IST. In that case, the draw would have to take place by 22:46 IST. Any delay beyond this delay would mean that the match cannot produce a result.
Five-player competition is usually fast-paced and unpredictable. Teams are forced to attack from the start, leaving little room for careful play.
If no game is possible, both sides share one point each.
KKR’S WASHOUT WOES
Rain has troubled Kolkata Knight Riders in the past as well. Their corresponding home match against Punjab Kings last season on April 26 was also scrapped, both teams share a point. KKR also had a rain-affected match in Bengaluru last seasonwhich hurt their chances of making the playoffs. They ended up finishing eighth in the standings, with those dropped points proving costly.
With form and weather playing against them, KKR will be hoping that the conditions improve and they finally get a chance to open their account this season.
