A strong 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck near one of Afghanistan’s largest cities in the early hours of Monday.
The earthquake was detected near the cities of Mazar-i-Sharif and the city of Khulm and struck at a depth of 23 kilometers, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).
Due to the timing of the earthquake, which struck at 1:00 a.m. local time, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) warned that it could be fatal.
“Significant casualties are likely and the disaster is potentially large-scale. Past events of this magnitude have required a regional or national response,” the USGS said. quoted as saying from CNN.
In early August of this year, at least 800 people were killed and more than 2,800 others were injured after a magnitude 6.0 earthquake hit a mountainous stretch of the province in the eastern region of Afghanistan.
