An earthquake of 3.8 on the Richter scale was hit on Sunday Afghanistan, said the statement of the National Center for Seismology (NCS).
According to the NCS, the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km, so it is susceptible to shocks.
Shallow earthquakes, such as this, are more dangerous than deeper due to their greater release of energy closer to the Earth’s surface.
Its causes of stronger soil trembling and increased damage to structures and victims compared to deeper earthquakes that lose energy when traveling to the surface.
Earlier Saturday, an earthquake of 4.2, NCS said.
NCS shared the details of the earthquake x, “EQ of M: 4.2, on: 07/06/2025 01:05:55 Ist, LAT: 36.50 N, Long: 67,82 E, depth: 126 km, location: Afghanistan.”
Afghanistan has a history of strong earthquakes and the Hindu Mountains Kush is, according to the Red Cross, a geologically active area where shocks occur every year.
Afghanistan sits on numerous turning lines between Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, while the failure line also runs directly through Herat.
Its location on several active fault lines along the collision zone between Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates makes it a seismically active area. These boards meet and knock and cause frequent seismic activities.
According to the UN Office for Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), Afghanistan remains very vulnerable to natural disasters, including seasonal floods, landslides and earthquakes.
These frequent earthquakes in Afghanistan cause damage to vulnerable communities that are already struggling with decades of conflicts and insufficiently developing and leaving them with little resistance to deal with several current shocks, Unhocha noted.
