Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar met Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani on Sunday (July 5, 2026) and reviewed several areas of bilateral cooperation, including energy, trade, investment, connectivity and security.
Mr. Jaishankar is visiting Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman from July 5 to 10.
The visit to the Persian Gulf comes against the backdrop of rapidly evolving political dynamics in West Asia following the signing of an agreement aimed at ending the US-Iran conflict.
Mr. Jaishankar thanked the Qatari Prime Minister for ensuring the safety and well-being of the Indian community in the country.
“We reviewed various aspects of our bilateral cooperation, particularly energy, trade, investment, connectivity, security and people-to-people ties. We explored new opportunities for deepening our strategic partnership,” Mr Jaishankar wrote on X.
Mr. Jaishankar also discussed the assessment of the conflict in West Asia and its impact with Prime Minister Al-Thani, who is also the Foreign Minister of Qatar.
During the ongoing visit, Mr. Jaishankar will meet his counterparts and top leaders of the four Gulf countries to strengthen bilateral relations and exchange views on regional developments and issues of common concern.
After weeks of escalating tensions, Qatar and Oman emerged as mediators, along with Pakistan, to broker a ceasefire with Iran. Indirect talks between the US and Iran in Doha will resume after the week-long funeral rites for slain Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei began on Friday (July 3, 2026).
After visiting four Gulf countries, Mr Jaishankar will travel to New York on July 13 to launch India’s official campaign for the 2028-29 UN Security Council term. He will then attend the 3rd meeting of the India-EU Trade and Technology Council in Brussels on July 14-15 and interact with his EU and Belgian counterparts.
