A 50-year-old truck driver was killed on Tuesday when the vehicle overturned into a pit from the Chennai – Bengaluru Highway (NH 48) at Vannivedu village near Walajah town in Ranipet. .
Police said the deceased was identified as S. Velusamy, a native of Karuru. It was around 5.30 am when Velusamy was driving the vehicle from Bengaluru to Chennai. While driving on the stretch, he suddenly lost control of the vehicle after falling asleep at the wheel.
The vehicle crashed into a pit outside the road section. He was killed on the spot. Passers-by and other motorists immediately rushed to the scene. They alerted the Walajah police who also rushed to the spot.
The police managed to extricate the vehicle from the pit. The body was sent to the Government Medical College Hospital in Vellore for post-mortem. A case has been registered. A probe is underway.
