The Defense Research and Development Organization and the Indian Air Force successfully conducted the first flight test of the Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation (TARA) weapon system off the coast of Odisha on 7
TARA is India’s first indigenous glide weapon system capable of converting conventional unguided warheads into precision-guided weapons for precision ground engagement.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the modular range expansion kit was designed and developed by the Imarat Research Center along with other DRDO laboratories. The system is aimed at improving the range, lethality and accuracy of low-cost air weapons.
The development program was carried out in collaboration with Development-cum-Production Partners and other Indian industries that have already started production activities for the weapon system, she added.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO, Indian Air Force and industry partners for the successful first flight test, describing it as a significant step towards strengthening India’s defense capabilities and self-sufficiency in advanced weapon systems.
Defense Research and Development Secretary and DRDO Chairman Samir V. Kamat also congratulated the scientists, engineers and teams associated with the successful test.
