Dr. Ambedkar Law University de-affiliates with three private law colleges

Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University has de-affiliated three private law colleges on allegations of violation of norms governing admission of students.

The university’s syndicate, in its meeting earlier this month, passed a resolution to de-affiliate these colleges in 2025-26, according to a press release. These are Thulasi Women’s Law College, Thoothukudi, S. Thangapazham Law College, Tenkasi, and Mukil Law College, Kanniyakumari.

Change of ownership

Sources in TNDALU said that S. Thangapazham Law College has changed hands and the new Trust has failed to get affiliation for the academic year 2026-27.

Two other colleges have applied for increased student intake in 2025-26 and secured provisional affiliation with the university.

According to the rules, they had to seek approval from the Bar Council of India, which last August had announced a nationwide moratorium on increasing seats or starting new colleges.

They admitted the students pending the approval of the Bar Council of India, which was granted in April 2026 after the moratorium was lifted.

Violation of standards

The statement said that admitting students pending approval was a clear violation of established norms and rules.

The breach came to light at the time students were registering for exams, sources said.

In its resolution, the Syndicate decided not to consider the application filed by Thulasi Women’s Law College, as stated in the press release.

Corrective Actions

However, it has decided to set up a committee to work out suitable remedial measures for the students who are already admitted keeping in mind their interest, he added.
