US President Donald Trump stressed that the United States cannot depend on China in terms of basic technologies, such as semiconductors, tokens, smartphones and laptops, the White House said on Saturday (April 12) after the decision to liberate these items from steep new tariffs.
Exceptions are a significant political step in the wider Trump strategy to reduce American dependence on Chinese production, especially in the critical sectors for national security and economic resistance.

Karoline Leavtt, a spokesman for Karoline Leitt, said that the main technology companies, including Apple and Nvidia, have already committed substantial US investments to strengthen domestic production.
“On the basis of the President, these companies are suppressed as soon as possible to the mainland in the United States,” Leavitt said, noting that efforts were associated with a long -term strategy to rebuild the US industrial base.
Tariffs and recent exceptions
Newly exempt items were previously subjected to a repressive 145% of the tariff on Chinese goods – part of the extensive business policy aimed at solving what Trump’s administration described as unfair business practices. These fees were deposited on 10% of the basic tariff for many foreign imports.
On April 5, the US Customs and Border Protection issued a notice of exclusion to 20 electronics categories, retroactive on the same date. These include products within the 8471 tariff code, covering a wide range of computer goods such as laptops, desktops, disk drives and data processing devices, along with flat panel displays, semiconductor devices and memory chips.
These goods are usually not produced on a scale in the US, so tariffs are particularly burdened for American technology companies depending on global supply chains.

While exceptions offer immediate relief to technological importers, the basic tension between the US and China remains unresolved. Beijing maintained instructions and a temporary 90 -day decrease in tariffs extended to some other nations was not used in China, which maintained high uncertainty.
