President Donald Trump Accepts Invitation for Second State Visit to the UK
US President Donald Trump has accepted an invitation from King Charles III for an official state visit, marking a historic second invitation extended to a US president. The invitation was personally delivered to President Trump by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer during a meeting at the White House on Thursday, February 27, 2025.
This unprecedented gesture makes Trump the first US president in recent history to receive a second state visit invitation from the British monarchy. “This is truly unusual—it’s never happened before. It’s unprecedented,” Prime Minister Starmer remarked during the meeting.
The invitation, which President Trump displayed to cameras in the Oval Office, proposes a meeting at either Dumfries House, a royal property in Scotland, or Balmoral Castle, one of the royal family’s residences. King Charles also suggested additional plans for a more elaborate visit.
In his letter, King Charles wrote, “It would be a pleasure to extend this invitation again, in the hope that you will visit Turnberry, with a detour relatively close by that wouldn’t cause too much inconvenience. Perhaps an alternative visit to Balmoral could also be arranged.”
The letter further emphasized the opportunity to discuss mutual interests and strengthen the “special relationship” between the UK and the US. “What we are working on will further strengthen the bond between our two nations, which we are both proud of,” the King concluded.
This invitation follows King Charles’ congratulatory letter to President Trump prior to his inauguration just over a month earlier. Such invitations are issued by the King on behalf of the Foreign Office and require government approval.
Prime Minister Starmer highlighted the significance of the invitation, stating that it “symbolizes the strength of the relationship” between the two nations. When asked if he would accept the King’s offer, President Trump replied, “The answer is yes.”
This second state visit builds on Trump’s 2019 visit, during which he met with Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle.
