US President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed executive orders that sought to publish universities’ foreign financing and tightened the accreditation process of university education needed to access federal financial assistance. The aim of the new executive order is also to “avoid illegal discrimination and ideological overlap”.
What does Trump’s executive order say for foreign financing?
The order is looking for complete and timely publication of foreign financing by university institutions. Trump ordered the Minister of Education to reverse any events of previous administration that allow universities to cover details concerning their foreign financing.
The order further directs universities to publish the real source and purpose of foreign funds and warns that some federal grant funds could be canceled for failure to comply with the publication of foreign financing.
The new order comes after Harvard University filed a lawsuit against Trump’s administration and claimed that the freezing of federal grants was illegal. The university has previously rejected the list of Trump’s requirements, which aimed at limiting the initiatives of diversity and fighting anti -Semitism, according to the BBC report. Reportedly, the Administration canceled $ 400 million financing at Columbia University to avoid keeping its requirement to reduce anti -Semitism on the premises.
What does Trump’s executive command say for accreditation?
Trump asked the Minister of Education to hold accreditors of higher education responsible for poor performance or violation of federal law of civil rights.
The Prosecutor General and Minister of Education were ordered to investigate and take steps to end illegal discrimination by American university institutions, including legal schools and medical faculties.
The order orders the Minister of Education to recognize new accreditors to support competition. Use students’ outcomes at the program level to improve results without reference to race, ethnicity or sex.
Why was this executive order required?
Minister of White House employees Will Scharf said: “The university accreditation is currently a process controlled by a number of third -party organizations that are law by law.
Problems with previous accreditation system
Trump emphasized problems with the previous accreditation system. He claimed that accreditations usually approve of poor quality institutions affecting students, families and US taxpayers. He accused the accreditation of their inability to maintain quality and in 2020 reported a national six -year university degree of graduation of only 64%.
The executive order stated that nearly 25% of bachelor titles and more than 40% of master’s degrees offer a negative return on investment, a burden for students with debt and limited gainful potential.
It is also argued that the accreditations abused their power by imposing discriminatory diversity, justice and integration (DEI) based on a violation of federal law.
