US President Donald Trump on Thursday, July 11, announced 35% of the customs rate for goods imported from Canada, starting on 1 August. This comes days after Donald Trump on June 28 announced that he is terminating interviews on trade negotiations with Canada.
“If Canada works with me to stop the Fentanyl flow, we may consider adjusting this letter. These tariffs can be modified, up or down, depending on our relationship with your country,” concluded US President Donald Trump his letter.
Donald Trump’s tariff letter to Canada
It is a great honor for me to send you this letter in that it shows the strength and determination of our business relationship and the fact that the United States agreed to continue in cooperation with Canada, although Canada was financially retaliation against the United States. As you remember, the United States has placed tariffs in Canada to deal with the fentanyl crisis of our nation, partly due to the fact that Canada cannot stop drugs in pouring into our country. Instead of working with the United States, Canada retaliation with its own tariffs. From August 1, 2025, we will charge a Canada tariff of 35% to Canadian products sent to the United States, separate from all sectoral tariffs. The goods transplanted to avoid this higher tariff will be subject to this higher tariff. As you know, there will be no tariff if Canada or companies in your country decide to build or produce a product in the United States and in fact we will do everything we can to achieve approval quickly, professionally and commonly in other words, within a few weeks.
If for any reason you decide to increase your tariffs, it will be 35%that we charge, whatever the number you choose to increase.
I must also mention that the Fentanyl flow is hardly the only challenge we have with Canada that has many tariffs and non-tariffs, politicians and business barriers that cause unsustainable
Trade deficits against the United States. Canada charges extraordinary tariffs to our dairy farmers up to 400%-and it even assumes that our dairy even have access to the sale of their products to people in Canada. Business deficit is the main threat to our economy and indeed for our national security!
If Canada is working with me to stop the Fentanyl flow, we may consider adjusting this letter. These tariffs can be modified, up or down, depending on our relationship with your country
Trump suggests a blanket of 20%
Donald Trump said on Thursday that most business partners were planning to store flat tariffs 15% or 20%, adding that the European Union and Canada can receive tariff letters by Friday.
“Not everyone has to get a letter. You know it. We just set our tariffs,” Trump NBC News said.
“We will only say that all remaining countries will pay, whether it is 20% or 15%.
US-Canada trade agreements under Donald Trump
Trump’s business suffering against Canada began in November 2024, before he became president when he announced plans for placing 25 percent of tariffs for all imports from the country and stated that she could not secure her relevant borders with the US.
1 February Trump announced 25 % of the tariff on Canada, as promised, only retreat for a month’s break. The tariffs were made 4 March, after which the trade war began, with Canada depositing retaliation.
Meanwhile, Trump’s steel and aluminum import tariffs, as well as car tariffs, continue to hurt Canada, even though his tariff fire escaped on the day of liberation.
In May, two separate federal courts canceled some of the steepest Trump tariffs, including 25 % of the Canadian goods.
Business interviews between Canada and the US began in mid -June at the G7 summit, when Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated the agreement within 30 days. However, Trump said June 27 that the interviews were “above”, as a result of Canadian plans to proceed with the tax on the American Technology Society.
The negotiations began again on June 29, when Canada withdrew its plans for taxation of American technology companies.
