US President Donald Trump faced loud boos from the crowd during the NFL game between the Detroit Lions and the Washington Commanders on Sunday. Videos from the stadium in Maryland showed Trump addressing the crowd as sections of the audience audibly jeered — moments that quickly went viral on social media.
According to the Associated Press, the booing started when a video of the president played on the stadium’s big screen. FOX News also reported that Trump was heavily booed upon arriving at the venue. Some reports suggested that the jeers continued during the military flyover at the stadium.
Reactions online were divided. One X user, Johnny Maga, criticized the crowd, calling it “the most disgraceful thing I’ve ever seen”, adding that fans booed “when he literally enlisted soldiers in the United States Army”.
The user wrote: “I’m listening to tfg live on TV in the broadcast booth right now. Nothing he says makes any sense! As usual, whatever he says is a lie and doesn’t mean anything. Just gibberish.”
“Boos on the NFL? That’s the sound of America rejecting a bone-spur cheater who avoided Vietnam while the real heroes were fighting. Trump being sworn in for a photo op? Pathetic. The military deserves more than your grimace,” commented X another user.
“The crowd didn’t need a script. The message was clear and Trump got it in full. America is not impressed,” wrote a third.
Despite the opposition, there were a few lighter moments. Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and his teammates were seen doing the “Trump dance” after the touchdown, prompting laughter and cheers from parts of the crowd.
The incident comes a day after ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Trump had expressed interest in having the Washington Commanders name their proposed $3.7 billion stadium after him.
Sunday’s game marked the first time a sitting U.S. president attended an NFL regular season game. Before the game, Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews that he was running late, adding: “We’re going to have a good game. Things are going very well. The country is doing well. Democrats need to open it up.”
Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson also attended the game.
