The tournament ended a difficult winter for England when they were beaten 4–1 by Australia in the Ashes. The series also questioned dressing room culture in England the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has launched a thorough reviewwhere the positions of Rob Key and McCullum were placed under the scanner.
Speaking to Sky Sports, McCullum reiterated that he loves working in England and there is still much to prove with the team. But the former New Zealand captain admitted he will reflect on the past few months and see what worked and what didn’t for him and the team.
“Look, I love the job,” McCullum said. “I think it’s a great job. Of course it’s not without its challenges, but that’s the nature of it. I feel like we’ve achieved some really great things over the last couple of years, but there’s still a lot to do with this side across all formats.”
“And I’d like to continue,” he added. “We’ll see what happens next time. At this point, after being on the road for quite a while, it’s a matter of getting home and hopefully watching some fast horses and playing some shocking golf, and it’s taking a while to make up my mind.”
“As always when you’re a player, when you’re a captain and as a coach, you let things land, you try and then you look objectively at what’s working, what’s not working and what things you need to try to fix.”
“WE DID NOT PLAY OUR STYLE IN AUSTRALIA”
McCullum is under contract with the England team until the end of 2027, which should ideally see him coach for the 2027 ODI World Cup and home Ashes. When it came to analyzing the series against the Aussies, the England coach said his team had abandoned the Bazball mantra that had made them so successful during his tenure.
McCullum also praised Harry Brook for bringing a new identity to the white-ball side, especially after a difficult Ashes period.
“Yeah, it was busy, wasn’t it?” McCullum told Sky Sports. “There’s been a bit of it across formats but I think the white-ball side has been exceptional in the post-Ashes period. We’ve played some good cricket and it’s got a real identity under Brookie as well.”
“Obviously the test winter was disappointing. We went to Australia with high hopes and we weren’t able to deliver, and that’s something you have to look at and say, ‘What are the things you need to improve on?’
“Did we play the style of game that we took to Australia or not? If we were honest with ourselves, I’d probably say no. And that’s something we need to have a good, hard conversation about. What’s the direction or style we want to be consistent with?”
The ECB will focus on completing a review of the squad’s performance as their next task is the Test series against New Zealand in June.
