Document writers in Tamil Nadu will not conduct any registration work on November 10 and 11, protesting the state government’s move to roll out Star 3.0
The state government has recently approved the establishment of Model Registration Centers (MRHs) that will enable citizens to register property documents and marriages at any center of their choice, irrespective of the jurisdiction of the local sub-registrar office.
A document writer from Coimbatore, Kannappan, said around 600 document writers in Coimbatore district protested against the privatization plans of the registration department on Friday. There are about five thousand document writers in the state, including 5,000 in Coimbatore district. Everyone will lose their jobs if the government goes ahead with privatization plans, he argued.
A similar system operates in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The entire registration process will be managed by a private agency and most of the work can be done online. The structure of fees for the public will also change. The move will affect nearly 15 million people who are involved in the registration process, he added.
The authors of the documentary therefore planned a series of protests in Tamil Nadu.
