As the festival of lights approaches, Hyderabad doctors are reminding citizens that while Deepavali is a time of joy, togetherness and celebration, it also brings risks of skin and eye injuries from firecrackers and pollution. Doctors have issued advice urging people to celebrate responsibly and safely.
Dr. Deepika J. Sanbal, consultant dermatologist at Kamineni Hospitals, said that every year hospitals see a spike in cases of burns, skin allergies and pollution-related skin problems during the festival. She urged people to handle fireworks with care and avoid direct contact. “Always wear protective gloves and have a first aid kit ready. If a burn occurs, wash the area with clean, cold water and apply ointment to the burn. Never use toothpaste or oil as this could make the injury worse,” she advised.
Due to the increase in air pollution during Deepavali, the doctor advised to use a mild cleanser and a good moisturizer to protect the skin. “People with acne or sensitive skin should be especially careful. If you are exposed to heavy smoke, wear a mask,” she added.
Dr. Navya Cherukuri of LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), in-charge of emergency services, gave the do’s and don’ts in case of an eye injury.
Dos: flush eyes gently with clean water or saline if there are any debris in it, keep the injured eye closed to prevent further damage, and seek immediate medical attention from an eye specialist.
Don’t: don’t apply pressure to the injured eye, use ointments, creams or any home remedies, never try to remove the foreign object or remedies yourself, and don’t ignore worsening symptoms such as pain, vision changes or bleeding.
