Doctors called for anti-drug education among the youth

Additional Civil Judge, Ongole, CH. V. Ramakrishna said doctors and medical students should set an example by promoting a drug-free lifestyle as well as creating awareness about the adverse effects of substance abuse on mental health and legal penalties for illegal supply and consumption of drugs to prevent drug addiction among the youth.

Mr. Ramakrishna was speaking at a drug awareness seminar at the Government Medical College (GMC) in Ongola on Saturday.

GMC Director Dr. During the programme, S. Sreevani urged the medical students to uphold the highest standards of professional ethics and healthy living and emphasized that future doctors have a greater responsibility to educate the society about the dangers of substance abuse.

Docent at the Department of Psychiatry, Dr. Sai Kiran, delivered an expert session on the medical and mental consequences of substance abuse. He explained the early warning signs of addiction, available treatment options and the importance of early intervention.

Meanwhile, Deputy Superintendent of Police Srinivasa Rao elaborated on the legal provisions of the Narcotic and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, the enforcement measures taken by the police and the severe penalties for drug trafficking, possession and consumption. He urged students to actively support anti-drug initiatives and report drug-related activities to the authorities.
