Members of the Denotified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes (DNT) communities have approached the Supreme Court of India seeking directions that their communities be clearly enumerated in the 2027 census with a specific question in the forms. The petitioners pointed out that since the establishment of the Republic, their communities had never been counted in any of the censuses, arguing that the absence of such data resulted in community members not being able to benefit from government benefits and other compensatory actions in their “collective interest”.
The petitioners, led by Dakxinkumar Bajrang, a leader of the DNT community in Gujarat, sought specific directions from the court to the Office of the Registrar General and the Census Commissioner of India to include a specific question on DNT in both the phases of the 2027 census, which are the dating phase and the population census phase.
