Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Monday said that the DMK and Chief Minister MK Stalin were against the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls from the very beginning. He said the time frame set for the exercise was insufficient and more voters than expected were struck from the rolls: more than 97 million voters across the state and 14 million voters in Chennai alone.
Talking to reporters, he pointed out that the Chief Minister had earlier talked about whose votes were removed from the list after SIR in Bihar. He said that even in Tamil Nadu, more voters than expected were delisted. In a meeting of DMK district secretaries held earlier, clear instructions were given on how to re-induct the dropped, left out and migrating voters. He said the public should check to see if their names remain on the lists and voters can be included in the lists again until January 18.
Earlier in the day, Mr. Udhayanidhi inaugurated a newly constructed homeless shelter near Anna Park at Marina Beach in Thiruvallikeni-Chepauk constituency. It was built at a cost of ₹ 86.4 lakh, with capital funds from the Greater Chennai Corporation. According to the official report, it can accommodate 86 people.
Kits containing mats, pillows and sheets were distributed to 86 people staying at a shelter in the Teynampet zone. The report said the 2,500-square-foot shelter was built for homeless people who live along the beach and make a living by selling handicrafts, balloons, cosmetics and flowers.
The release added that the shelter has separate male and female toilets and bathrooms, lockers and potable water and electricity. Chennai Corporation already runs homeless shelters at 45 locations.
Municipal Administration and Water Supply Minister KN Nehru, elected representatives and officials were present at the event.
