DMK MPs on Thursday (July 16, 2026) urged the BJP-led Union government to set up a tribunal to resolve the dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka over the proposed construction of a buffer tank at Mekedat and to prevail on the Karnataka government to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. The resolution to this effect was adopted at a virtual meeting of deputies, which was attended, among others, by the party chairman MK Stalin from London.
The resolution said that Karnataka had failed to comply with the final decision of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal by not releasing its due share of water to Tamil Nadu. “Mettur Dam could not be opened due to the rebellious attitude of Karnataka. This has caused immense hardship to the farmers,” read the resolution passed in the meeting.
The resolution further stated that while the DMK was in power, it had prevented Karnataka from proceeding with the construction of the Mekedatu Dam. “Our leader, MK Stalin, succeeded in persuading the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change to reject Karnataka’s proposal to allow the construction of the dam and ensured that the Cauvery Water Authority returns a detailed report on the project,” the resolution said.
Another resolution said that DMK MPs in both houses of Parliament would raise their voice in support of issues concerning Tamil Nadu.
