DMDK general secretary Premallatha Vijayakant on Friday urged the Tamil Nadu government to form a committee to recommend the minimum support price (MSP) for agricultural production, alleging that farmers are being affected by low prices and power supply issues.
In a statement, she said farmers in Cuddalore, Virudhunagar and other districts are facing problems as agricultural produce is not fetching remunerative prices despite their investment and hard work. She also claimed that frequent power outages disrupted agricultural activities and added to the hardships of farmers.
Stating that farmers form the backbone of the state’s economy, Ms. Premallatha said the government should ensure fair prices for agricultural produce and protect farmers’ livelihood. She urged the government to set up a committee to look into the issue and recommend an SME mechanism, saying it would help improve the economic condition of farmers and protect their interests.
