DMDK general secretary Premallatha Vijayakant on Monday said the party was open to a “give and take” policy on seat-sharing with the DMK for the Tamil Nadu assembly elections.
Asked during an interaction with reporters at the party headquarters in Chennai whether the party had been urged to reduce the number of seats in the DMK alliance, she said, “Captain (Vijayakant) was the Leader of the Opposition (2011-16) and we were able to form booth committees across Tamil Nadu comparable to the DMK and AIAD MKs for the larger interests of the alliance.” She said the alliance was formed as per the wish of the party officials and the DMDK expects the DMK to call the party for talks after reaching agreements with other allies.
“We will contest as part of the DMK alliance in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Our district secretaries have been with us since 2006. We will discuss how we can win the seats allotted to us…we will accept their suggestions and work together,” she said.
Ms. Premallatha reminded that DMDK has contested in all 234 constituencies in the past and is present in every constituency. “We will soon announce the number and constituencies we will fight for,” she said, adding, “the candidates know what it takes to win a seat in the House.”
She said that “party loyalty” will be the main criteria for those who want to contest on the DMDK ticket.
