Who is DK Shivakumar?

Shivakumar, one of the most prominent Congress leaders in Karnataka, has represented the Kanakapura Assembly constituency for eight consecutive terms and is serving as the president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee since 2020.

He was instrumental in leading the party to victory in the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections and was instrumental in strengthening the organization in the state.

Changing of the Guard in Karnataka

The swearing-in ceremony marks a major change in leadership in Karnataka, with Shivakumar succeeding Siddaramaiah as chief minister after consultations with the Congress leadership.

Siddaramaiah resigned as CM on 28 May 2026, paving the way for a changing of the guard in the state. The move is in line with the 2023 ‘rotation formula’ – the promise was that Siddaramaiah would rule for the first two-and-a-half years and then allow Shivakumar to take over the remaining term.
