Divided by fans, united by statistics: Two GOATS, uncanny similarities
On the eve of Lionel Messi’s 39th birthday, his arch nemesis – strictly on the pitch – became the first man to score in six different FIFA World Cups. Yet as the football world continues to debate who is the greatest of all time, both icons are constantly finding ways to battle it out on the biggest stage.
While Messi leads the scoring charts at the World Cup, freed from the historic triumph of leading Argentina to glory in 2022, Ronaldo continues to chase his crowning achievement. With Portugal boasting one of the most talented squads at the tournament, the opportunity is certainly there – but so is the weight of expectation, a burden that few players can carry.
If Ronaldo is still chasing a World Cup highlight, Messi seems to be playing with complete freedom – and the results are extraordinary.
GOATS
June 17th Messi scored a hat-trick in his 200th appearance for Argentina and in their opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His performance made him the oldest player to score a goal at the FIFA World Cup, while also helping him break countless other records. On the same day, Cristiano Ronaldo fired a blindside shot in Portugal’s World Cup opener against the Democratic Republic of the Congo. While the football world praised Messi’s genius, Ronaldo was being asked by many to either retire or settle for a place on the bench.
“They said I should retire, but I’m here,” Ronaldo said after the subsequent game against Uzbekistan, as translated and quoted by Fabrizio Romano.
June 22 Messi scored another brace to seal Argentina’s qualification for the knockout stageswhile becoming the top scorer at the World Cup.
The pressure on Ronaldo grew. This latest double marked the gap between Messi’s first and last World Cup goals now 20 years and 11 days.
To many, it seemed as if Messi would once again steal the spotlight in the rivalry that has defined modern football. Every record he broke seemed to strengthen his argument in the endless GOAT debate.
However, on 23 June, Ronaldo started against Uzbekistan in a must-win game for Portugal, despite a growing chorus of criticism and doubt surrounding his place in the starting line-up.
Ironically, it was after six minutes that Ronaldo made history as the Portugal captain became the first player to score in six different FIFA World Cups. Portugal looked comfortably ahead when Nuno Mendes doubled their lead in the 17th minute. Ronaldo then completed the match-defining brace, converting a wonderful through ball from his substitute Bruno Fernandes to make it 3-0. Portugal eventually cruised to a 5-0 victory and Ronaldo took home the man of the match award.
Most striking, however, was the gap between Ronaldo’s first FIFA World Cup goal and his latest strike against Uzbekistan – 20 years and 11 days.
Exactly the same as Messi.
On the day Ronaldo opened his scoring account in the tournament, he found himself back in direct competition with his biggest rival. In a rivalry full of remarkable coincidences and extraordinary records, it was another chapter that seemed almost written.
MESSI AND RONALDO: A STAT FOR STAT MATCH
For nearly two decades, Messi and Ronaldo redefined football excellence. Each major trophy, individual accolade, goalscoring record and historical milestone often resulted in one pushing the other to greater heights. Their rivalry divided fans, dominated debate and shaped an entire era of football. Messi and Ronaldo share a camaraderie on and off the pitch. (Photo by Reuters)
Yet, for all the differences in style, personality and career paths, football continues to produce striking similarities between the two.
- The youngest scorer of the Argentine World Cup – Lionel Messi
- Argentina’s oldest World Cup scorer – Lionel Messi
- Portugal’s youngest scorer at the World Cup – Cristiano Ronaldo
- The oldest scorer of the Portuguese World Cup – Cristiano Ronaldo
That’s perhaps the most apt summary of football’s greatest rivalry. While fans still argue over who deserves the title of greatest of all time, Messi and Ronaldo keep producing moments that unite them as much as separate them.
Divided by fans, united by statistics.
Two GOATS. Uncanny similarities. And even in the twilight of their careers, neither seems willing to let the other have the last word.
